James 3:14 “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

Just as rotten water can have a devastating impact on a city, bitter words can have a disastrous effect in our lives. We need to recognize the challenge of bitter speech.

Our words are powerful, and it only takes a few bitter words to destroy relationships. Our words are inconsistent, because with the same mouth we bless and curse.

James 3:14 lists several aspects of bitter speech:
• It is often jealous, filled with selfish ambition, prideful, and dishonest.
• This kind of bitter speech does not come from God but is demonic in its source.
• It tends to produce false evaluations of our circumstances and irrational fears about the future.

This kind of bitter speech is destructive, but there is hope through God’s Word and by His Holy Spirit to overcome bitter speech and speak to others in a way that honors Him.
