Matthew 16:24-26, “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
Everyone seeks happiness in something. Whether it be sex, money, power, or leisure, everyone has a vision of the good life and how to achieve it. The Christian path to happiness and human flourishing is to follow the path of the cross.
Ultimately, this means being like Jesus. If Christians are to commune with God and know what it means to be truly and fully human, we must shape our lives to look like Christ’s, and Christ’s life was shaped by the cross. The cross is not only the means of our salvation but the map for our lives.
When someone is united to Christ by faith they are given the ability to follow Jesus in a life marked by humility, compassion, and suffering. This leads us to Jesus and His kingdom and thus to true happiness and flourishing.
