Ephesians 1:5, “In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will…“
The highest privilege of the gospel is adoption. According to His pleasure, we become His children! God has always been a Father. He is not merely like a Father, but eternally is a Father because He eternally has a Son. As we relate to Him, Jesus urges us to consider our world. We might think of much of it as ‘naturally caused’ but if we do, we miss the ever-present gracious hand of our eternally generous Father.
Instead, we can receive His generosity and enjoy our Father in heaven
simply through receiving the world He has made, from the sound of birds, to the feel of sunshine or rain, and so much more. Whatever good things we enjoy!
Not only is it the good things that Father gives. He invites us to enjoy Him even in hard times. As a loving Father, He disciplines us. He has a purpose in and through difficult experiences. It is difficult but possible even in tough times to move toward God in enjoyment of His Fatherly hand on us.
Most of all, though, He is supremely kind. The Father does not love us reluctantly but with great joy. He delights in His children, and delights most of all when we delight in Him.
