Death of Porn, session one:

  • Friends, it takes a bold step in order to stand in boldness. Sometimes it takes a John Wesley to tell us to finally step up. I can appreciate that Wesley called out William Wilberforce. For were it not for Wesley, perhaps Wilberforce would not have been the man who finally defeated the slave trade.
  • Now the purpose of these meetings over the next couple of months is once again overcome the slave trade of our day, the slavery of porn. Is porn that serious? Yes! Pornography oppresses and vandalizes and dehumanizes. It is degrading and it takes captive heart, soul, and mind.
  • Therefore, I agree with Ortlund, God is calling us—just as he called Wilberforce—to do something about this modern slave trade. We have to admit, odds are against us. The porn industry has overwhelmed almost every outlet of media.
  • Listen, according to data from the SEMrush Traffic Analytics tool, as of May 2021, porn sites received more website traffic in the U.S. than Twitter, Instagram, Netflix, Pinterest, and LinkedIn combined. Porn won’t loosen its grip. And we can’t just accept it
  • We might look at the supposed realities and say, ‘well what difference can we make?’ It is impossible with man, no doubt. But God is withyou, and with Him all things are possible. So let me repeat what Ortlund brought to our attention; Your battle against porn isn’t about porn. It isn’t about sex. It isn’t about willpower.
  • Your battle is about hope. It’s about your heart believing that in spite of your many sins, God rejoices to give you a future you can scarcely dream of. You’ll win your fight by believing that God’s love for you is too great to be limited to what you deserve.

You Are Royalty:

  • Explanation – If you’ve read chapter, you’ll be aware of the author’s point, that we are royalty in the image of God. But for one, this image is distorted. Secondly, we’ve gone after other gods. However, in salvation, Galatians 3:27 says we are clothed in Christ.
  • This is how Irenaeus’ quote fits in our story when he says, “The glory of God is a man fully alive.” Therefore, as a God-created man, you have every right to see yourself as “crowned with glory and honour” (Ps. 8:5). You are the True King’s royal ambassador to this broken world.
  • Illustration – That’s also how we start getting traction for the way ahead, by believing that God created you for a purpose of greatness and not for being trapped in our sinful status. Yes, “Everyone who sins is a slave of sin” (John 8:34 NLT).
  • But our creation is intended for God’s glory! Our entrapment of sin comes as a lingering option. Truth is, our sin, once entertained, becomes our master! Romans 3:23, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
  • Application – So we have a problem: evil or sin. However, that doesn’t change our position before God. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said: “You are a sinner, a great, desperate sinner; now come, as the sinner that you are, to God who loves you. He wants you as you are; He does not want anything from you, a sacrifice, a work; He wants you alone.
  • You can hide nothing from God. The mask you wear before men will do you no good before Him. He wants to see you as you are, He wants to be gracious to you. You do not have to go on lying to yourself and your brothers, as if you were without sin; you can dare to be a sinner.
  • Conclusion – So as Ortlund emphasizes, God can re-create you in His image all over again because God does it through Jesus, who now comes into the picture.

Jesus Renews Our Royalty:

  • Explanation – Because of Jesus, the cross was where God started bending our evil around to restore us. God didn’t hide our evil through the cross, He exposed it and paid for it. Therefore, when God washes you clean of all your sins in the blood of Christ, you can allow yourself to experienceforgiveness.
  • This is important because sin keeps you hanging back from God. And feeling bad about it doesn’t make you more forgivable. It actually hinders your way to forgiveness.
  • Illustration – After the cross, your sin and shame cannot drive God away. God welcomesyou back with more and more mercy. Not
because your sin destroyed you but because Jesus restores you, “bringing many sons to glory” (Heb. 2:10).
  • Can porn have the final say over you once you’ve handed it over to Him? No! When you come to Jesus for the forgiveness you don’t deserve and the re-creation you can’t cause, He makes you “a new creation. For the old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Cor. 5:17)
  • Application – So friends, Heath Lambert put it this way; “What is the answer? Is it a shocking statistic that causes people to stop? Is it the right 12-step program or group? Is it just willpower through hours of Bible reading and prayer? The answer is no. In fact, none of those things can even scratch the surface of sinful hearts.
  • Knowledge about the evils of pornography is necessary. Taking steps to limit pornography is essential. Bible reading and prayer are wonderful tools in the battle. But, the true power is God’s grace.”
  • Conclusion – Therefore Ortlund points us to starting with making a decision:
  • One, accept that Jesus considers you worth fighting for. This is such a great comfort! I’m always telling folk, you can first get on track and then come to Jesus, He is the one you brings you into right relationship.
  • And then two, prepare for battle. Our reform is not just to stop looking at porn but also to start pushing back against the industry that creates it. This involves more than shutting off media devices or blocking websites.
  • Viewing pornography is typically the last stop on a long road of sexual sins. So the thought life is the first area that needs to be addressed, there needs to be a readiness to push out lustful thoughts by considering pure thoughts.
  • Next, alone time needs to be severely restricted to times of personal devotion or times in which porn is inaccessible, especially in the early stages of fighting porn addiction. Don’t close the study door, or stay in your locked room when temptation strikes. Get up, and get out.
  • Lastly, radical measures need to be taken to prevent the availability of porn. This means getting rid of the sources of porn in your life. If it’s a smartphone, switch to a dumb one. If it’s a friend’s computer, ask them to keep it locked down at all times. If it’s a porn store, change routes to work. If it’s on a hotel television, get an accountability partner to confirm that you have removed the TV from your room.
