Growing Through Adversity:

Adversity could mean facing trials, hardships, and difficulty. But it is in adversity that we grow when we persevere! Our faith is strengthened, matured, and made complete. James 1:2-4 reads as follows; “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

James reminds that we are to value trying times and that our approach should be God-honouring. So despite the difficulty and anguish, we are called to consider it joy when faced with various trials. Not because we enjoy pain but because we know that through adversity our character is stretched and grown into Christ’s likeness.

Therefore, we are to rejoice, knowing that God is in control and at work in our lives for our good and for His own glory. If trials were of no value, God would not allow them. This is also why we are called to respond in faith and trust Him. Yet, adversity should also point us to the Word of God, as He still speaks to us through His Word – comforting us & directing us.

So instead of resisting God’s work in our lives through adversity, we need to learn to rely on Him – His strength. For every believer, all pain has meaning, all adversity is profitable; but it is when we look to Christ that we will begin to see this & understand things better.
