Ephesians 1:3-14, Spiritual Blessings

  • This passage is all about praise! Praising God the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit for every spiritual blessing given to believers. And it sort of reveals in 3’s. First:
  • 1) We give praise to the Father who elects, vv4-6.
  • 2) We give praise to the Son who redeems, vv7-12.
  • 3) And we give praise to the Holy Spirit who seals, vv13-14.

  • Next, it deals with the past, present & future of every believer:
  • 1) Our election from eternity past.
  • 2) Our forgiveness in the present.
  • 3) Our inheritance in future.

  • But these are only a reality for those who are in Jesus Christ! Which is today’s outline:

  1. Our Election From Eternity Past:
  • Text – 1:4-6
  • Verse 3.

-We give praise “Blessed be” to God the Father for the spiritual blessings anchored “in Christ”—in his person and work in salvation—and “in the heavenly places.”

  • 1) He chose us in him before the foundation of the world: “I believe the doctrine of election, because I am quite sure that if God had not chosen me I should never have chosen him; and I am sure he chose me before I was born, or else he never would have chosen me afterwards; and he must have elected me for reasons unknown to me, for I never could find any reason in myself why he should have looked upon me with special love.”

-The fact is, God choose those who belong to Him and those who will belong to Him before time. Not based on favouritism.

-But what is election? Romans 8:29-30, the elect are those who are chosen before the creation of the world, for salvation in Christ. God’s sovereign choice of people for redemption and eternal life

-So why did He choose us? God has chosen to make us holy and blameless! What a blessing, that “even when we were dead in sins” (Ephesians 2:5), God chose to extend His grace to us and offer us salvation before sin even entered into the world.

Side note:

-In love… it seems to fit with verse 4 or either with verse 5. If it belongs to v4, it describes the nature of the holiness & blamelessness. He did this work in love for us.

-Or with v5, it simply means His predetermined choice of us is an act of love. He didn’t not predestine us to be robots.

  • 2) He predestined (predetermined) us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will: Not only has God chosen us to be made holy, but He grants us full status as His children, with all the benefits thereof.

-John 1:12, “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

-The blessing is that when we believe the gospel, we receive full access to the Father, able to call out to Him as His children.

-It is also known as the doctrine of ‘adoption’. Roman 8:15

  • 3) He has blessed us in the Beloved:this means we were accepted.  This grace is the unmerited favour of God for the free gift of salvation that God gives to believers through faith in Jesus Christ.

-to simply put it, we are made favourable through Christ. Because when we put on Christ, the Father sees Him when He looks at us.

-The blood of Christ has taken away the guilt of our sins, and we stand before the Father as perfectly accepted.

  1. Our Forgiveness In The Present:
  • Text – 1:7-12
  • 4) the redemption through His blood:

-Redemption speaks of buying one’s freedom, paying a ransom. The price for our sins, the payment to buy us out of eternal condemnation, was fully paid by the blood of Christ.

-In Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin, but we become slaves to God. Since we are bought and paid for by His blood, we have an obligation to glorify God in our body and spirit (1 Corinthians 6:20).

  • 5) v7b the forgiveness of sins.

-Closely related to redemption, it is the other side of the coin.

-In paying the ransom for our sins, and cancelling the debt of sin, we are forgiven.

-We no longer have the burden of guilt for violating God’s holy laws.

  • 6) in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth: The sixth spiritual blessing is knowing the mystery of His will.

-God has given us wisdom and insight through His Word and has shown us His desire to bring all things together to glorify Christ.

-Since all of creation was made by Him and is for His good pleasure (Revelation 4:11), the consummation of His plan is when everything and everyone is brought in line to glorify Him.

-How? By aligning ourselves with Him by faith, we become part of His perfect plan and purpose.

  • 7) v11, In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will:

-Another blessing is the inheritance that is given to us through Christ.

-What is included in that inheritance? “But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

-The riches of glory, the presence of God, the eternal home, and more!

  1. Our Inheritance in the Future:
  • Text – 1:13-14
  • 8) v13, the sealing of the Holy Spirit.

-When we become God’s children, He places His mark of ownership on us, guaranteeing our eternal security.

-We are given a mark, branded – labelling.

– The guarantee is that the Holy Spirit will complete this.

-This is spoken of as the down-payment of our full redemption, to hold us until the day Christ brings us to Him. Phil 1:6.

Application:

  • Question 1:
  • How do we access all of these blessings?

  • Question 2:
  • How are you encouraged to know that the Holy Trinity are working in and for your salvation?

  • Question 3:
  • Discuss the beauty of election, adoption, forgiveness, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit:
